Being in a State of Flow

I first came across Willard Wigan’s micro sculptures in a TED Talk a few years ago. What struck me was that he spoke slowly, found a bridge between art and science and pursued his interest in micro sculptures with singular focus. Besides the similarities: I too speak slowly – it annoys some people, and I have a strong background in the sciences and technology being a late entrant into graphic design. There is also a significant difference. Willard found his passion young, I found mine later in life (mid forties). Finding my passion later in life presented me with numerous challenges. Meditation helped me during this transition.

Thus, I admire Willard Wigan MBE and his work greatly. In doing so I am reminded of the work of Mihály Csíkszentmihályi who has been studying what makes us happy and has found that happiness is being in a state of flow. Milhaly describes flow as “a state of heightened focus and immersion in activities such as art, play and work.”

I can also see a connection between the state of flow and meditation. In both states we are intently focused, the monkey chatter is stilled. It is in this state that we create our world…
